As the sun rose on the Connecticut shoreline on August 29, 2011, the damage was still there. Hurricane Irene has left a scar on the quaint north east shoreline. This time of year you expect to see families soaking up the last bit of summer sun before school starts, kayaks and sail boats enjoying the breeze on the warm water, people jogging or strolling with their dogs along the calm waters of Long Island Sound. Yet Monday August 28th is about clean up, especially along the shore. Its about sweeping, scrubbing, contractors, and getting power back on. As inland areas deal with down power lines and down trees, the shoreline deals with flooded basements, water damage, sand, and debris. Above and below are some more pictures of the Bayshore Drive, Melba street and Point beach areas of Milford, CT during and after the storm. The photo at the top is looking at Bayshore Drive from the beach at Point Beach. this view shows the waves crashing into houses right on the water. The photo below shows those same street but from behind the houses, where the road was completely flooded. The photo below was taken from Melba street, which is higher in elevation then Bayshore Drive. The photo beneath that with the street sign for Bayshore Drive is taken from the opposite end as that of the first two pictures. This area of Milford had extensive damage from hurricane Irene's storm surge. Beneath the Bayshore Drive street sign picture is a view of Point Beach, which is a low lying area that sticks out into Long Island Sound and is where the aftermath pictures are taken from.

The Aftermath

The following photos are some pictures I was able to take with my phone in Point Beach neighborhood while checking in on my grandmother's friend. The first two pictures are horrific! These are homes that are east facing and took a beating from the sound. The waves crashed through the house not on them! In many cases taking off the fronts of any homes that were not on stilts. According to my gransmother's friend, she heard that the people that live in the blue house in the second picture have decided to just move, not being able to take the destruction anymore. Also in the second picture, if you look closely to the house on the right, you can see through a side door into house and out onto the water. This is because the whole front of the house has torn off by the waves! The last two photos is the view of the tiny streets, filled with debris that didn't float in from the sound but floated through the neighbor from the house in the east that got hammered by the waves. My grandmother's friend who was lucky enough not to sustain major damage due to being built on the western side of the neighborhood but also on slightly higher ground (even though she is right on the water), was shocked to see furniture (the last photo below) floating through her yard in a river of salt water. The last picture is just one pile that sits outside her home, it is not even her furniture just the furniture that washed into her yard. Across the way on another beach in Milford a large safe washed up on the beach, with a floor board still attached to it!! As of yesterday afternoon power was still not on in the area, some were rebuilding others packing up. This storm hit the coast hard. Other stories are surfacing in other parts of Connecticut where whole homes have been washed away but yet many outside the northeast are calling Irene a over-hyped storm, all i have to say to them is come visit before opening your mouth!

I took this photo with my cell phone of the destruction along the beach to people's homes in MIlford, Ct from hurricane Irene, the waves crashed right through bottom floors!
